Fall 2007 SRG Update

By Dr. John Cusick

Fall SRG Competition

On October 11th, the SRG held its most successful competition to date, thanks to all those that participated in helping make it a success! Eleven students presented their research findings to the group describing research activities in a variety of fields. Faculty judges had the difficult task of choosing which students among the many talented entries who were most deserving in attending an upcoming national meeting.

Nic Bennetts (DS1) was selected to be our Hatton Award representative at the next AADR meeting in Dallas for his work studying craniofacial development in the mouse under the mentorship of Dr. Clouthier.

Additional students that were selected by the SRG to represent our school at future meetings are listed below:
Nic Wilson (DS1) annual ADA meeting in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
Brian Kleinman (DS3) annual AADR meeting in Dallas.
Matthew Checketts (DS1) annual AADR meeting in Dallas.
Angelique Freking (DS1) annual Midwest SRG meeting at the University of Minnesota.

University of Colorado Denver Research Forum

The annual research forum for the entire Anschutz campus will be held on Wednesday, January 16th from 1-5 PM.

Research Day Poster Competition

A poster presentation competition will be held just prior to Research Day in February. Faculty judges will determine which students are most deserving to attend future meetings such as the DENTSPLY competition as well as the annual Hinman Student Research Group Symposium held at the University of Tennessee. This poster style competition will be closed to the public, since we are encouraging participation by the public at the poster session on Research Day.

Research Day 2008

The 24th annual Research Day for the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine will be held on February 20th, 2008. Our distinguished guest speaker will be Dr. Clark Stanford from the University of Iowa. Dr. Stanford received both his D.D.S and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Iowa and is currently director of the Office for Clinical Research. Dr. Stanford has a wide range of interests in the field of Prosthodontics such as osteoblast response to metal surfaces and biomaterials, osteoporotic bone disease, and the early biological events of bone mineralization.

Ben Howard

Although the complete schedule for Research Day was not available at the time of this writing, the 24th annual Research Day will be an all day event featuring a variety of research topics spanning prosthodontics, biomaterials, public health and the basic sciences. Research Day will consist of a poster session and SRG members are encouraged to present their data at the Research Day poster session. Presenting a poster at Research Day also requires submission of an abstract to myself by Friday, January 18th, standard guidelines for AADR abstracts will be used.

How do I get started?

The SRG held a meeting on October 15th inviting Faculty members to present their research project ideas to the students. We will periodically have these types of meetings attempting to bring Faculty members together with students, yet students are always free to contact myself regards to finding a research project.
