The Newest Club On Campus

Students at the University of Colorado welcomed the inception of University of Colorado's Association of Women Dentists (UCAWD) as a refreshing and much needed organization. The organization debuted in late October with a host of events that have excited students about our near future profession and have the hopes of becoming an alliance and resource for its members.

LoDo Dental Event

Hapa Sushi event

UCAWD kicked off with happy hour at Hapa Sushi and since has held several other events. At 7a.m. prospective members wiped the funk from their eyes to attend the first Brunch and Learn with Dr. Brittany Seymour, DDS, a 2005 UCHSC graduate. Dr. Seymour opened her practice, Lodo Dental, last July and spoke about what it took, what it's like to be a young female dentist, current issues in her practice, what it's like to practice in Lodo, and gave us a virtual tour of Lodo Dental. Chances are if you've been to downtown Denver, you've passed it on 15th & Wazee. Dr. Seymour also talked about Teaching Tiny Teeth, a program she authored to educate elementary students, a service trip to Brazil with Global Volunteers, as well as a day of free dental screenings she is providing to the Denver community. For more information please visit her website: www.lododental.com. UCAWD is making Brunch and Learns a regular event so, stay tuned. They're early, but they're worth it!

Lowry Family Dentistry Event

Lowry Family Dentistry tour
Another event was the tour of Lowry Family Dentistry, which opened in October 2006. Owned by Dr. Makala Hubbell DDS, a graduate of University of Oklahoma, Lowry Family Dentistry was nominated for Best Practice Design in this year's ADA competition. UCAWD's own Brunch and Learn Coordinator and DS3, Jennalyn Slootmaker, who works at Lowry Family Dentistry, gave the tour. The tour included the cleanest lab any of us have ever seen as well as a wide range of technology including digital radiographs, apex locators, and massaging chairs. If you'd like more information on Lowry Family Dentistry and Dr. Makala Hubbell, visit www.lowryfamilydentistry.com.

Emily Enjoys Massaging Chair

Following the tour, some of the members went to Salty Rita's for margaritas, dinner, and game 3 of the World Series. The Rockies game was a bummer, but you can't go wrong with margaritas!

The events held so far have been a great reminder that the end of school is near, and so is the beginning of our careers, which should prove to be far more exciting and rewarding.

If you're interested in joining UCAWD it's not too late! Please email us at uc.aawd@gmail.com or visit the National AAWD website at www.AAWD.org for more information.
